Uma de suas principais vantagens é a facilidade de interpretação, desde que as taxas de risco para dois indivíduos não variem ao longo do tempo. Na prática, a suposição de proporcionalidade dos riscos pode não ser verdadeira em algumas situações. Além disso, em diversos dados de sobrevivência é comum uma parcela das unidades não ser suscetível ao evento de interesse, mesmo que o tempo de acompanhamento seja suficientemente grande, comumente chamada de fração de cura.
