models have been widely used in forest sciences. In relation to hypsometric modeling,
they bring a series of potentialities associated with obtaining height
estimates considering homogeneous or non-homogeneous stands. The models
initially proposed for height estimation as a function of diameter at breast
height, thanks to computational advances, have been extended to include other
variables. This article aims to present a literature review, following the
methodological procedures described by Cervo and Bervian (2011), and to expose
a support material for forest biometricians, regarding the choice of a
hypsometric model, in which historical information is brought, the generating
process of such models, species in which they have been commonly applied and
how some of them can be generated from ordinary differential equations. The results
showed that most models were developed according to the characteristics of the
forest stand and/or the behavior of the hypsometric curve. It is noted that the
work of Trorey (1932) was the pioneer in the use of a mathematical equation to
demonstrate the relationship between tree height and diameter. The use of
non-linear models in forestry studies emerged with the work of Turnbull (1963),
while generic models gained ground in forest biometry after the developments of
Curtis (1967). It was possible to show in this study that two generic ordinary
differential equations can give rise to a number of existing models.
