Dear all,
The MusMat research group is pleased to invite you to the first event of
its 2026 academic lecture series, which will feature talks and activities
throughout the year dedicated to the intersections of music, mathematics,
computation, and related fields.
Our opening lecture will be given by Mariana Montiel and is entitled:
*Variations
on Mathematical Themes or How Music has Shaped my Research Agenda*
*Date:* June 3, 2026
*Time:* 6:00 PM (GMT-3, Rio de Janeiro time)
*Format:* Online
*Abstract:* The talk addresses the evolution of one aspect of my research
agenda in mathematics from the end of the 1990’s until the present. This
evolution is marked by music and musicians who look to mathematics as a
tool to analyze and create; however, we will look at the perspective of
music as a stimulus for advances in mathematical research questions, both
pure and applied. In particular, I will talk about the mathematical
foundations of certain computer related subjects, such as algorithms and
software architecture. The need to adapt to the big changes brought about
by neural networks (machine learning) and quantum computing for music
generation that came about, also required a reassessment of the nature of
the mathematics that can enhance efficiency, accuracy, and generalization.
We will explain how category theory has contributed to these mathematical
foundations and continues to be a strong tool in the search for a shift
from massive scaling and empirical dominance to mathematically principled
architectures. Music generation is always present as a motivating force.
*Speaker bio: *Mariana Montiel began to work in Mathematical Music Theory
(MMT) under the direction of Guerino Mazzola and Emilio Lluis-Puebla,
becoming a contributor to the first edition of the Topos de Music, one of
the emblematic works by Guerino Mazzola, published in 2003. She is
president of the *Society for Mathematics and Computation in Music* (*SMCM*)
since 2023 and has been part of the organizing and scientific program
committees for the biennial *MCM* (*Mathematics and Computation in Music*)
conferences since 2017 as well as coeditor of the past five MCM volumes,
published by Springer. She was member of the editorial board of the *Journal
of Mathematics and Music* before being elected to the presidency of the
*SMCM* and is presently on the advisory board both for the Springer book
series *Computational Music Science* and *Súmula: Revista de Teoría y
Análisis Musical*. She has published peer reviewed articles, book chapters,
and conference proceedings addressing the relevance of MMT to theoretical
questions in mathematics and computer science, including their pedagogy.
She has edited, with outstanding coeditors, two books on MMT by invitation
of World Scientific publishing. Her past and present Ph.D. students pursue
research in both applied and theoretical mathematics as related to music.

A Q&A session with the speaker will take place immediately after the
lecture.
Both the lecture and the Q&A session will also be streamed live on YouTube
for those who prefer to attend through that platform.
