<p class="MsoNormal"><i><span style="background:white">It is with great sadness that I share news of our colleague, Dr Barry James' passing. Professor Barry James received his Ph.D. in Statistics from University of California Berkerley in 1971. After seventeen
years working at the Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, he joined the faculty of UMD's Department of Mathematics and Statistics in 1987. He was the Director of Graduate Studies for the Applied and Computational Mathematics
program for seven years, and the department head/acting department head for five years. In 1996, he received UMD's Jean G. Blehart Teaching Award. He has advised/co-advised 45 master's projects and 13 UROP projects at UMD. After his retirement in 2016. he
continued to be a vital part of the department by mentoring new faculty members. </span></i><o:p></o:p></p>
