Dear colleagues,

As the 6th biennial International Statistical Ecology Conference
(ISEC 2018) approaches, authors are now invited to submit an abstract of
their presentation (oral or poster) for ISEC2018. Submission deadline is
Monday 15th January 2018. Registration for the conference will open in
mid-November, consult the ISEC 2018 website http://www.isec2018.org when
you submit your abstract.

Possible topics for contributed talk and poster sessions include (but are
not limited to) abundance, animal movement, big data, biodiversity,
capture-recapture, citizen science, community dynamics, disease ecology,
distance sampling, epidemiology, evolutionary ecology, fisheries,
individual-based models, integrated population models, metapopulation
dynamics, multispecies models, non-linear dynamic models, occupancy models,
population dynamics, spatial ecology, species distribution models, and
survey design.

We particularly encourage submissions from research students, early career
academics and researchers from countries under-represented at previous
ISECs. If you have contact with statistical ecologists in countries
outside of Western Europe, North America, and Australasia, we would be most
grateful if you would circulate this notice around your networks and
encourage these researchers to participate. We are also delighted to inform
that a limited number of participation grants will be available, on a
competitive basis, for scientists with accepted abstracts who are nationals
of and work in developing countries (as defined by the Population Division
of the UN Dept of Economic and Social Affairs) -- details will be on the
ISEC web site shortly. Childcare facilities will be available (at a
charge), additional details on the web site.

The scientific programme committee (SPC) is committed to providing unbiased
reviews and each abstract will be independently reviewed by three SPC
members. Each abstract will be assessed in terms of *novelty* (this can be
statistical novelty or new ecological insight the research has achieved),
*relevance* to the conference and *quality* of the work. Be aware that we
expect a larger number of abstracts to be submitted than those for which we
have time slots available, so please ensure that your abstract highlights
these novelty, relevance and quality criteria. Please provide the abstract
following closely the guidelines and template provided on the website.

We look forward to receiving your contributions, please do refer to
http://www.isec2018.org or our twitter feed #ISECStatEcol for our regular
updates. In the mean time, let us remind you that, amongst the many reasons
to visit St Andrews, including famously random weather that ensures four
seasons in a day, we have also secured a great group of plenary speakers,
with Tara Martin, William Link, Jennifer Hoeting, Stephen Ellner and our
very own Steve Buckland. There will also be pre-conference workshops taking
place, including :

   - Combining Different Data Types in a Single Model (Nick Golding, Nick
   Isaac, Liz Martin)
   - Template Model Builder (Kasper Kristensen, Anders Nielsen)
   - Modelling Spatial Point Processes with INLAbru (David Borchers, Janine
   Illian, Finn Lindgren)
   - Hierarchical Modelling of Species Communities (Otso Ovaskainen)
   - Model-based Multivariate Analysis of Abundance Data using R (David
   Warton)
   - Statistical Models for Animal Movement (Mevin Hooten, Devin
   Johnson, Brett McClintock, Juan Morales)

Separately, but just prior to ISEC and nearby, is another workshop that may
be of interest. Michael Schaub & Marc Kéry will deliver a Integrated
population modeling workshop in Aberdeen 25-29th June 2018. Check our
website for additional details.

All the best, looking forward to see you in Scotland next year!

The ISEC 2018 Team
