My deepest condolences to Herman’s family and close friends. He was an influential example to many generations of Bayesian statisticians and econometricians.

My interest in Monte Carlo methods for Bayesian computation is heavily influenced by his 1978 Exonometrica paper. This is a very sad day.

Message from Dimitris Korobilis:

“Today is a profoundly sad day for me as we say goodbye to Professor Herman van Dijk, a true pioneer in Bayesian econometrics and one of the most inspiring individuals I have had the privilege to know. Herman played a pivotal role in shaping my journey as a Bayesian. He supervised my MSc dissertation, introducing me to the beauty and depth of Bayesian methods. His mentorship during that formative time was invaluable and set the foundation for my career.

Since then, Herman has been not only a mentor but also a great friend and a wonderful person to be around. His warmth, generosity, and boundless curiosity made every conversation a joy, and his passion for research was contagious.

Herman’s contributions to our field are unparalleled, and his legacy lives on through the countless students and researchers he inspired. He will be deeply missed, both as a brilliant scholar and as a kind and vibrant presence in our community. Rest in peace, Herman.”
