*Título: *Three myths about residuals and other stories
*Abstract: *This talk is divided into two parts, both related to the
diagnostic analysis of parametric regression models. One of the main tools
for performing this analysis is the examination of residuals. They are
measures of the discrepancy between the observed and the fitted values by a
regression model. Although diagnostic analysis is typically carried out in
works related to parametric regression, errors are commonly made in this
analysis. In this work, we list three myths about residuals that lead
researchers to make mistakes in the diagnostic analysis. Two myths relate
to criteria for choosing the best residual for performing diagnostic
analysis of a specific parametric regression model. The other myth is
related to the distribution of the (randomized) quantile residual. Using
different tools, we discuss why these myths are incorrect and modify them
to become true facts. In the second part of the talk, we summarize our
contributions in residual analysis.

*Minibio: *Possui graduação (1999), mestrado (2004) e doutorado (2012) em
Estatística pela Universidade de São Paulo e foi professor visitante na
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (2022). Atualmente é professor
adjunto da Universidade Federal de São Carlos. Tem experiência na área de
Probabilidade e Estatística, atuando principalmente em trabalhos
relacionados a modelos de regressão paramétricos.
