*Resumo*

Polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (PolSAR) systems are important tools
in remote sensing. These systems provide images with high spatial
resolution but are affected by an interference pattern called
multidimensional speckle. This issue requires special processing of PolSAR
images. In particular, tailored models are needed to capture the physical
formation of PolSAR data. In this talk, two new matrix distributions are
introduced, resulting from the application of the stochastic summation
approach to PolSAR. These are the Compound Truncated Poisson Complex
Wishart (CTPCW) and Compound Geometric Complex Wishart (CGCW)
distributions. They uniquely allow the representation of multimodal data.
Maximum likelihood estimation methods using an expectation-maximization
algorithm for CTPCW and CGCW parameters, as well as MLC-based graphical
fitting tools, are provided. Finally, the proposed laws are used to
describe current PolSAR images and are shown to outperform other known
distributions such as Wm, G0m, and Km.
