*Title*: Connecting with the Community - What is the Story that we want to
tell with Statistics?

*Abstract*:
There are statistics behind the stories that are reported and there are
stories behind these statistics. Strategic goals of the International
Statistical Institute emphasize statistical communication and networking,
increasing the public voice of statistics and developing statistical
capacity. In this talk, I provide a context for the importance of
communicating statistical concepts, and then I describe the collaboration
between statisticians and journalists to develop a podcast to address this
issue. The history and context for the 6 year old Stats+Stories podcast
will be presented. The steps for implementing this podcast along with its
evolution and future will be described. A consideration of how this podcast
might be integrated in classes also will be discussed.

*Short Bio*:
A. John Bailer is university distinguished professor and founding chair of
the Department of Statistics at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. He is
currently President-elect of the International Statistical Institute, and
he will serve as ISI President starting in August 2019. He previously
served on the Board of Directors of the American Statistical Association.
His research has focused on a breadth of collaborations addressing problems
in toxicology, environmental health and occupational safety. He
collaborates with journalists to produce the podcast Stats+Stories. He is a
Fellow of the American Statistical Association, the Society for Risk
Analysis and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He
received a Ph.D. in Biostatistics from the University of North Carolina at
Chapel Hill and was a staff fellow at the National Institute of
Environmental Health Sciences before joining the faculty at Miami
University.
