Dear friend of Brian Marx,



On Thursday November 25, Brian Marx passed away, after a short struggle
with brain cancer. He was surrounded by his wife Alexandra, his son
Leopold, and his mother. Alexandra asked me to inform his friends in the
statistical community about this bad news.



We all remember Brian as the nice guy in the picture below. He always
looked boyish and indestructible. He was such a nice person. We will keep
that image in our minds forever.



Brian did a lot for the statistical community. For many years he was editor
of the journal *Statistical Modelling*. He steered it through a difficult
period. It is now doing well, with an impact factor that grows every year.



Brian was one of the most faithful attendants of the International Workshop
on Statistical Modelling. Since 1989, he did not miss a single one. In 1998
he organized the workshop in New Orleans, a memorable edition. He was
always very active, scientifically and socially. He was a magnet for nice
company.



Brian also was a good statistician. The *Web of Science* lists 67 papers
with Brian as first author or co-author. Many of them have been cited well.
He was co-author of four books. See the link to his web page below. In the
next issue of *Statistical Modelling* an obituary will appear.



Brian and I have been working together since we first met in 1989 in
Trento. He has been a crucial influence on my career. I will miss him a lot.
