One Day Meeting on Statistics and Applied Probability
November  4th - 5th 2021

Vai decorrer, nos dias 4 e 5 de novembro de 2021 (quinta e sexta-feira da
próxima semana), o encontro One Day Meeting on Statistics and Applications
organizado pelo grupo SAPOR do Centro de Matemática da Universidade do
Minho. Apesar de gratuito e de decorrer ONLINE, os interessados devem
inscrever-se até às 13h do próximo dia 3 de novembro na página

Este encontro reunirá investigadores nacionais e internacionais e visa a
apresentação e partilha de investigação na área da Estatística e
aplicações. Inclui também um mini-curso, "A light Introduction to Machine
Learning", lecionado por João Gama e Bruno Veloso (LIAAD-INESC TEC,
Universidade do Porto).

Short Course: A light Introduction to Machine Learning (Thursday, November
4th)
Abstract: This short course consists of presenting the fundamental ideas on
Machine Learning and Data Mining. We will present the basic tasks,
algorithms, and methods. The course syllabus includes the following topics:
Machine learning tasks, Distance-based algorithms, Naive Bayes, Decision
trees, Neural networks, Support Vector machines and ensemble methods.
Illustrative examples using Knime and R.
Duration: 6 hours.
Instructors: João Gama e Bruno Veloso (LIAAD-INESC TEC, Universidade do
Porto).

Workshop Day (Friday, November 5th)
Workshop Day is dedicated to talks on several topics, such as, Bayesian
Statistics, Epidemiological Methods, Extreme Values Analysis, Generalized
Linear Models, Spatial and Temporal Modeling and Survival Analysis, given
by experts in the field.
